Annual Meeting
February 6th 2012

The Scott County Conservation District (SCCD) has set the date for the Annual Meeting on  February 6th 2012 at 7p.m.  It will be held in the William Carpenter Building at the county fair grounds. The RSVP slips will be printed in the Scott County Record from December thru January.  Supper will be provided by 5th Street BBQ. Our sponsors for the dinner are Security State Bank and First National Bank.  The speaker this year is Eric B. Banks, the Kansas State Conservationist. You can find more information Mr. Banks at http://www.ks.nrcs.usda.gov/about/stc.html. Western State Bank is donating money towards the speaker but because he can not take monetary donations we have jointly decided to give the gift to Pass It On- Outdoor Mentors. Pass It On is an organization that encourages children to get out and learn about the world around them with a mentor. To read more on this group we have provided the link for you. http://outdoormentors.org/

SCCD gives out several awards at the Annual Meeting to those who keep conservation in mind all year around, called Banker's Awards.  The Soil Conservation Bankers Award is given out to those who made soil conservation a priority, showed improvement and success in following a guideline set for their land. This year's Soil Conservation Banker Award goes to Dennis Bontrager.  In addition to the Soil Conservation Banker Award,  SCCD gives out other Bankers' Awards earned through through other practices with conservation still being a factor. We will be presenting Chandler and Meredith Cupp the Windbreak Award, and James H. Kirk II will receive the Grassland Award. To see a more information on the Banker's  Awards and how they are chosen follow the link listed and click on KS Bankers Awards listed on the upper left hand side. http://www.agronomy.ksu.edu/extension/p.aspx?tabid=46

This year's top three brochures were created by 1) Abbigail Prochnow 2) Kaitlyn Roberts 3)Kevin Herndon and Sahil Anil.

6th Grade Conservation Field Trip

Every year the SCCD sends the 6th grade class on a Conservation trip. Its a time to teach young people about the importance of conservation, and the methods that we use in our county. The 6th graders get a taste of the different aspects of daily activates taking place in the county on a regular basis. This last August the kids had a full day with seven different stops. The first stop was at the Scott City Sewer Ponds. Next they went to the Co-op Fertilizer station, and then on to The American Implement. They went to see an established windbreak after that, and to Royal Beef for their lesson on feed lots. The second to last stop was to see terraces and the last stop was for wildlife lesson at Scott Lake State Park.
The SCCD would like to thank all the people and organizations who help with this trip.
